Following ancient cattle pathways, the great grass roads, through magnificent countryside. In search of towns, historical sites and the excellent culinary products of this little known region.

These great grass roads, called ”Tratturi”, still partially preserved, are now an heritage, a part of the economic and social history of Italy. The Regi Tratturi, 110 meters wide, cross Molise and are connected by smaller paths reaching towns and villages.

Take this opportunity to walk the Tratturi together with a professional hiking guide to discover history, culture and culinary traditions of absolute value. You will be seduced by nature, visit archeological sites from the time before the Romans, meet friendly and curious people and enjoy the traditional Molisan food and wine. 

The walks are made in groups and assessed as light to moderate and will take you from the mountain and hill paths to the Adriatic Sea.  

The starting point of the trip is the beautiful medieval village of Ripabottoni, situated 650 meters above sea. The village is located in the center of Molise and offers fantastic views of the rolling countryside. From here we comfortably reach both the Matese Mountains and the Adriatic Sea.   

Accommodation: in the village Karin runs a B&B and house rentals. The accommodations offered are double and single rooms in various houses in the village, only 5 minutes walk from each other. The rooms are individually decorated, comfortable and with private bathrooms.

Daby day: 

Day 1
Arrival in Ripabottoni and check-in.  Welcome and tour briefing followed by buffet dinner.

Day 2
Mountain, Archeology, Cheese. Trekking about 12 km.

The bus brings us to the Matese mountains and Campitello di Sepino (1100 a.s.l) where we walk the path called “Sentiero 3 frati”. At lunchtime we visit a noted farm which produces superb local cheeses; we stop here for a light lunch consisting of products from the farm. After lunch we enter the “Royal Tratturo Pescasseroli – Candela” that crosses “Altilia”, an important archeological site with remains from both the Roman and the Samnite period. After the guided tour the bus takes us back to Ripabottoni. Traditional regional dinner.

Day 3

Castle ruins, Regi Tratturi , Truffles. Trekking about 14 km

The bus brings us to Castropignano village. Our trek will start from the Castle along the Regio Tratturo Castel di Sangro – Lucera. During our lunch stop we will have the pleasure to taste the fresh, high quality truffle that is picked in Molise. We continue our trek along the Tratturo up to Ripalimosani village. Time for a coffee and walk in the village. We return to Ripabottoni and a traditional regional dinner.

Day 4
Ripabottoni to Casacalenda, Walk about 12 km

After breakfast we start our walk directly from Ripabottoni. Today’s destination is Casacalenda and an ecological farm that produces, cheese, salsiccia and olive oil. For lunch we try their products and we return to Ripabottoni by car and a relaxing afternoon. Late in the afternoon pizza preparation and Pizza dinner in the garden.

Day 5
Adriatic Sea, Regio Tratturo L’Aquila – Foggia, Wine. Trekking about 15 km

The bus takes us to Marina di Montenero di Bisaccia where we start our trekking along the sea up to Torre di Petacciato, a ruin of an ancient tower. Time for a bath (depending on weather conditions). Transfer to a winery for a light lunch composed of products of the territory with wine tasting. Transfer back to the beach and trekking up to the ancient fishermen’s village of Termoli. Leisure time and shopping before our outdoor traditional fish dinner. After dinner the bus takes us back to Ripabottoni. 

Day 6

Valle del Cigno, Larino, Olive oil. Trekking about 12 km

The bus brings us to Casacalenda. Today’s trekking  is along the beautiful Valle del Cigno up to Larino, a very important city of the Samnites, the first people of this region, defeated by the Romans. after the  quick visit to the city, our time will be dedicated to high quality olive oil and its production. We will taste the exquisite Larino’s olive  oil that we get to try during the light lunch served at a private house. We continue our trek on via Francigena and Tratturo before coming back to Ripabottoni. This evening we will have our traditional dinner in a  restaurant not far from Ripabottoni.

Day 7

After breakfast it is time to say Good-by to Ripabottoni.

Flights and transfers: Closest airport is Pescara (1,5 hours by car or train). Rome (3,5 hours by car or train), Naples and Bari (2,5 hours by car or train). For a small group of max. 8 people, we can help with the hiring of a minibus with a driver if desired.

Total price 890 euro per person.

What is included in the price?
Six nights with breakfast in a shared double room, all lunches and dinners with wine/water as specified in the program, English speaking guide during the tours, shuttle to the trekking starting places. 

Not included: The flight and transfer to and from the airport, travel insurance.
Registration fee: 150 Euros to be paid within 10 days after booking, the fee is non-refundable. (The fee will be refunded if the organizer decides to cancel the trip).
